Draping a Dress with One Piece of Fabric!
In this video, I take ONE piece of fabric to create an Asymmetrical Cowl Draped Dress inspired by the Japanese Designer Junya Watanabe.
This avant-garde drape is deceptively simple, but yet would be considered an exercise in advanced draping.
To Learn the basics of draping get my new book "The Fundamentals of Fashion Draping" available on amazon.com: amzn.to/4aibzd2

A midriff waist design features a bodice with a horizontal seam between the bust and the waistline. The back of the midriff waist top is simpler than the front, but can be modified with a "V" or "U" shap...

what would be very kewl is if you did a full video where you had an actual model where you did this on (obviously very careful with the pins) and then showed a fast version of how you sewed it and then the final fitting.

For us corset fans, would draping happen any differently to hide the lines of a custom-made corset? Any recommendations on layering fabric to make sure the corset is unnoticeable (except for the flawless shape of course).

I have a question please. Now that I have those pieces for a pattern, does this mean I do not worry about seam allowance in the cups area? Do I just cut fabric according to these pieces with an extra 1-2 cm for the edges and sew them together and that would be it? Or are there additional steps for the seams in the center and side front before I can cut fabric according to these pieces?

  • @WaldoWilson

The thing that confuses me about draping straight onto a mannequin is how do you take it back off and sew it all together without losing your pleats and fold etc?

(Linda). Hi Nick, i just found your YT channel and so happy that I did. I am getting back into sewing after 10 years (what ugghhh waste of them too!) Anyway, I have found a dress form Size 6. I messaged the person to get the measurements and 'still' waiting. By any chance would you know the Bust, waist and hip measurements? It they are smaller than me, i would then buy it so that I can work draping with your teachings. Your work is wonderful and beautiful! thank you 🥰

This is very useful! I have struggled to grade my patterns I'm making when I make them multiple sizes on one paper. You mentioned thar once you reach size 14 you do half inch on ea side. Do I double the amount on shoulders and armhole as well, like 2/8th instead of 1/8th? I have a basic top with a horizontal bist dart and also vertical dart. How do I grade that ?
